Many years ago during his old "Duncan Dares" series he spent some time with Lofty Wiseman. From memory he spent some time learning plants, building shelter, fishing and making fire before going on a trek which culminated in building a raft on the sea shore.

My advice would be to keep it simple rather than lots of displays and get the scouts involved. Trust me if you have lots of displays the scouts will eventually start to get bored whereas if you can keep them active they will enjoy things a lot more. I don't know the facilities you have...

Totally agree with Ed re how to use the Firesteel. I have a question for those who use the Ultimate Survival firesteel/blastmatch... Has anyone found that by pushing the flint into the tinder they've destroyed their bundle or struggled to get it to light?

Hazel is great for camp craft type stuff such as tables, kitchen drainers and the like but if you want to build something substantial in the classic sense then pine is by far and away the best. We use pine poles for our pioneering poles.

Sleeping Miser We used to play this with the scouts indoors where if you didn't tread quietly you'd be heard on the floor. Outdoors gives a different challenge with dead sticks, squelchy mud and the like all making different noises. Have a scout blindfolded and preferably sat on a chair...
