What do you pack to be FOUND???

I always carry mirror, whistle, torch, mobile, survival blanket (pegged or tied out with a torch flashed on it, not a bad night marker), means of making fire (for smoke signals by day, light at night) and leave route details with reliable, level-headed friend. So far (35+ years of hiking and...

    ULW or SULW

I do both ULW and bushcraft - but not at the same time. If I'm parking my backend in a patch of woodland for a weekend or more, then I tend to take too much. Admittedly, I'm probably also taking along a couple of whippets, so as well as my stuff there's dog bed, coats, kibble, meat, leads...

    Ferret related Question

I've had ferrets for a couple of decades now, pet and working (at the same time) and they are cute, inquisitive, thieving, playful, affectionate and only smelly when dirty or terrified (they do a skunk-like metallic stink when they're extremely scared. I've only smelt that twice in more than 20...

N.E.S Meet #8 April (Glen Tanar)

Have we got directions to the site anywhere? I can find Glen Tanar no problem but finding the camp within the estate may be more challenging....

    N.E.S Meet # 7

I'm happy to demonstrate how to make purse nets, I might well bring the makings along just to pass the time anyway. I also have lots of thistledown at the moment if that's wanted for natural tinder?

    What would you do here?

Hare is traditionally hung for several days before being gutted, as are several other species of game, so I would respectfully suggest that your mother's hunting friend doesn't know his game preparation. Unless there's a break in the skin that would allow bacteria in from outside or the guts...

    N.E.S meet #6

It'll have to be a very good stock fence to stop a whippet who can jump 6 feet high with no problem! :) I was relying on teaching the dogs that sheep and lambs are not lawful prey, it seems like less hard labour somehow. Windbreak sounds good though.:D

    guyline thightners

You could learn to tie a tautline hitch - instructions in loads of places on the web, like http://www.netknots.com/rope_knots/tautline-hitch - once you've mastered this you don't need to put tighteners on your guys because the hitch will do the job. It's free, too! All you need is the end of the...

Recommended kit for an evening (dog) walk?

I like the glowing collars! I have a nite-ize zip-lit on each of mine - spooky dots bounding round the dark trails....:D I just take a few poop-bags stuffed in a pocket, double-ended lead, 2 dogs, headtorch and a sense of adventure.

    N.E.S meet #6

A chance to do some stock-proofing from a distance! They haven't met lambs yet.... they're good with horses and cows, the elder one is okay with sheep but sheep are rarely ok with dogs...The joys of raising puppies. Thanks for the warning. :)
