Out and About in the Snow

Hey David, They're handcrafted by Natives near the James Bay area. They're moosehide with beaver trim, and lined with Hudson's Bay wool blanket material. And the beaded decorations are Canada Geese. Thanks! KK

I say budget, you say knife

I actually understand quite well the whole "fitting in thing" because, having been raised in a tourist area of Canada, I've seen the folks that come totin' all the rig - and laughed at them behind their back. No doubt people will treat you like a prince to your face, but IMHO your experience...

I say budget, you say knife

I find these threads interesting, so I'll poke my nose in again , if you don't mind... Speaking as one of the people like those you might be meeting (ie , NOT a Londoner, but a North American outdoorsy guy), if you are interested in 'impressing' and/or fitting in and not coming off as a dweeb...

Don't mind at all! It's a BK14. I got the scales from the supplier who sold me the knife. I took a dremel tool to them, and 'dimpled' them. The scales came in both orange and black. ATB, KK

    Ice fishing tips

Yes, good point - keep the bait/lure about 6 - 8" above the bottom. Hook size depends on species, and it's the same as any other time in that regard. I personally will tend to use a slightly smaller hook than many people. I think the key to the thing is a good stout, strong line.

    Ice fishing tips

Wow. Now we're talking my language. Something I can understand! :) So much depends on species, water conditions etc. I like what we call "Swedish pimples." It's a kind of 'jig' and it's excellent for the trout family. A lot of times for smaller species, we'll just tie in a smaller lead jig...

Thanks! Seems to fit me OK, but most knives I own could use a bit of extra length for my liking.
