Best thing to do is take a few swings with both, see which one feels better. The heartwood may have a little more shock down the handle due to it being a little harder.
I cut my scales at 10mm. Once you add on the liners and tang, that gives me a good inch to play with. For most that's more than enough.
What's the measurement of the widest part of the handle you have?
A nice thick handle is beneficial when needing full grips for more powerful cuts, but not...
RWL is better as it is a powder steel ( actually so is CPM come to think of it, confused it with 154CM). Smaller/cleaner grain structure, looks like porcelain when heat treated correctly. Not used CPM to make something, but used it on other knives. I do prefer RWL
Nice machine Hugh. It's more than i'll ever need for keeping the woodburner in the new workshop fed though. I'm still able to enjoy manual splitting, and i don't have anywhere near as much work to do as you guys do. I did treat myself to a chainsaw, as i was getting bored of felling and bucking...
