I've been meaning to ask this for ages.

I handled my woodworkers using a bit of wood we've had for ages. Thought it might be rose (the bark is a reddish brown) but it's got a really perculiar grain. Any ideas? I was thinking that perhaps it's diseased. Poor pics below.

I was thinking a fruit or rose. However, that grain's just too weird. It's almost like there are solid, grainless deposits running through it. Hard as you like (though it was seasoned.)

No expert , but looks very much like old wild cherry , end grain may have been painted to prevent splitting during seasoning, bark colour tempers enthusiasm

cherry popped straight into my head when I saw the photo. Cherry is hard and difficult to carve.
