Following on from this I thought about my grandson and came up with this from bits I had.
FerroGuide2.jpg
FerroGuide1.jpg

Flat bit of scrap with a thin slot cut in near the edge. Notch cut out to allow sparks to fall onto tinder. Pound shop Veg chopping finger guard, stick carved to fit finger guard.
Use
Fit Stanley blade into slot. Put tinder on metal plate, try to tuck a bit between stick and guard to make it more secure. Hold flat scrap down with left hand, draw ferro rod over stanley blade with right hand.
When lit carry burning bundle to already set up fire bundle and scrap off into kindling.
RECOVER BLADE for next time

Could be made by scout with SAK and use it's blade???

Tried out the 'knife on a stick and pull the ferro rod across it' today while lighting a little fire in the wood to make tea. What a brilliant idea. I'm still a novice at this but using a ferro rod has been a journey of wastage, either scattered tinder everywhere or spending ages showering sparks all over the place and trying to get enough on the birch bark powder to get it lit.

Today though, took two draws on the ferro rod and everything burst into flame. Definitely be using this technique a lot more from now on. Thank you Neil, for a brilliant bit of advice.

Thank you very much my friend for taking the time to try it and let me know it worked for you - that is very kind. I hope it's the start of a long journey!
