Firstly , I am not sure if this is the right place to post this or not

I have been trying to source a book for what seems an age .
Back when I was at school (late 80's) we had a book in the school library that was old and tattered then . It was a red book as they used to be before jackets were common . It was all about poaching techniques and gave details on each technique . The one that stuck in my mind is the barbed wire warren snake . I can't remember the name of this book , but it is one I would love to read again and add to my collection of outdoorsman books . I have bought many a book on the subject in the hopes that it is the one I am looking for , but they all seem to be story based and this was definitely an instructional book . Has anyone ever come across such a book and have any ideas on what the name may be ? I have searched the net and amazon in hopes of finding it but have had no luck so far .
Cheers

That sounds like something I'd like to read too Pumbaa

I've not heard of it but I'll have a rummage around to see if anything comes up.

Poachers and Poaching by john Watson has a red cover
or perhaps the The Poachers Handbook by Ian Naill.

I have the Poachers Handbook by Ian Naill and it is all 'story' based, it isn't to hand though so I cannot confirm if it is the one with the "barbed wire warren snake".

My copy has a yellow cover, good luck with your search and let us know how you get on.

What's a barbed wire warren snake?
Is that where you use a piece of barbed wire or bramble to locate a rabbit/ferret that's at a stop end and you keep probing the holes until the barb/thorn has some fur on it?

Almost BW,
the version I know is to use a bramble and twist it down a warren - going a step further than just some fur, you keep twisting until the rabbit is well & truly secured and can be pulled out!

Yes that's the barbed wire warren snake , and yes it is a bit brutal .
Got the poachers handbook and poachers & poaching by John Watson and its nether of them . I wish I had had the foresight to have forgotten to return it to the library , even if that is a little dishonest . It was full of techniques that whilst I wouldn't practice them , would be interesting to research what has been used successfully in the UK .

It used to be a common practice here to get squirrels out of hoolows in trees. Never with barbed with though; always with whatever you could pick up off the forest floor.

Hi, try http://www.anglebooks.com Coch y Bonddu Books they specialise in Field Sport books, if you don't find your book in their catalogue try phoning them for assistance in search. There are a number of possibilites but if book was instructional it shortens the search somewhat as many are story-based, is there any specific clues you can give such as names/places in book or publisher etc, any clues whatsoever.

No it was far earlier than that , it would have been late 80s when I saw it and it was ancient then . The school has moved and been renamed since then so I doubt the library would have a record of it . Will try that angel books and speed if they can help .
