Can anyone tell me what this pair of pliers are for?

It was one of my fathers and if it was designed for a specialised task he didn't know.

yep, gas/plumbing pliers. The pointy ends are for undoing flat head screws as sometimes seen on pipework and the cone shaped point is for flaring the ends of a pipe to make better seal on compression joints (car brakes often have the ends flared for the same reason).

I have several pairs (in a couple of different sizes and also thicknesses) and I use them a lot in the workshop :) The wide jaws are amazingly useful
