Chromium is used in the tanning process, but it is a strong irritant and allergen. So maybe not a good idea to go commando!

Hej Red Fox, did you check for any markings/stamps on the inside?
That should tell you right away.
It most definitely has the Swedish cut and style.

I had one of those white livpäls Janne talked about. Ended up selling it, along with matching sheepskin hat, since it was wayyy to heavy, stiff and cumbersome. yet I could not resist buying a similar one to Chiseller's a little later on. Main difference, besides the color; the sheepskin is sewn into the green coat, whereas the white one had the skin buttoned in on the inside. The wool was white(ish) too. The coat was a lot longer too with a double row of buttons. I believe those white ones were designated M1942.

Yep the swedish army hade 4 different companies making them my one was the most popular. Thay stopped making them in the 1960s. I will probably take it to the Arctic because it will be good next to fire and not rip .its havey but it will go on a toboggan

There's a button hole tab on the inside, near the hem:

Right at the bottom, not the cloak tab at the top. There's a tab each side, but no button . Any idea as to the actual purpose or use? The only thing I can think is that it's to allow the corners to be held up and out of the way if/when sitting etc ~ they're well placed to attach to the buttons on the pockets

The only thing I idea I can rationalise is to hold the front out of the way when either sitting or lifting your knee(s) (getting in and out of vehicles etc)

That's one of my thoughts. Lifting the knee and sitting are both eased when the hem's 'pinned' up ~ but that's not to say that that's the correct and intended usage

(For all I know there could have been matching Livpals chaps (underslung Malung???) and that tab was where they attached :yikes: )

The M59 uniform had a "beaver tail" in the back of the field jacket, that would connect to buttons in the front. I guess the purpose of this "flap" connecting front and back between the legs was to prevent the jacket from riding up the torso in certain situations, and maybe some wind protection. Could the Livpäls have had a similar feature? Would mean you could spot remnants of the flap somewhere in the rear. Maybe buttons in the back?

Regarding what the garment is designed for, I figure stationary guard duty, more than activities like riding, but I'm not an expert.

I must confess I'm a bit envious now... If that is real sheepskin. I would probably live in that jacket. Maybe even change my adress to it
Is there a split in the behind bottom of the jacket?
The button concept could be for riding, as already suggested, but it is not a good idea to lift the jacket off the saddle like this in bad weather. You will most likely make an opening in front for rain or snow to gather in your croch, giving blue balls another meaning. For a riding coat to be effective, it needs to cover your pelvis and the saddle, directing water down and away from your seat. Trust me...few things are worse than hours in a saddle sitting on a wet "sponge" of leather and fabric *deleting memories*
Still, the button concept on this jacket might still be intended for this use, and is probably a nice idea when the weather is good
When the rain starts, release the buttons to cover your front of the saddle (and back) and you'll probably have a very nice ride

These are just my thoughts on the subject though...
