I find beanie type hats come off in the night. When sleeping outdoors, I wear a balaclava but only if it's really cold.

Woody girl's idea seems good. It is the system my youngest granddaughter uses when the family is travelling It provides a safe and familiar personal space wherever she is. Only drawback I can see is when needing to get out in the night to pee.

No worse than being in a tent outside. I'd put a tent lantern or torch inside the tent too as it would not be possible to reach out for a bedside light.
Balaclava is a great idea. Trouble is your nose and eyeballs get cold still. I've woken with my eyes hurting as it was so cold before now! That is why I think it might be better to make a microclimate around where one sleeps.
Another idea is to put a hooded sleeping bag under the duvet and snuggle the hood round your head.
I do know vans can be blooming cold. It's like living in a tin shed at times. Very depressing. I can remember crying with cold waking up with frost on my blanket and huddling over a single candle for warmth! Horrible times!
Occasionally I stay at a friends off grid 14 footer. No heating. Fine in the summer. Gets a bit uncomfortable in the autumn. .. I never go in winter! Tengu is brave!

I dont have much choice these days. Been here 5 years now.

I found a strange object in the car; its my fathers woolly hat. (I do hope he isnt missing it) So I will try that. I have hats of my own, but they have peaks, which is no good.

I unpicked a sleeve off that jumper; alas, too narrow for my head. But I now have plenty of material for something. That was a lucky find; fleece material is ideal for a hat. I dread to think what it wold be to purchase

Thanks for the offer WG, but I am fine.

I know one thing; If I ever buy a static of my own I will make sure it is insulated and has central heating...and a wood stove.

Thinking on that tent/4poster idea.

Its a modern version of the box bed, yet? a bed in a microclimate.

It wouldnt work for me. I start by wrapping snugly, then if I get hot I can kick it off with no trouble.

I couldnt do that in a tent.

I can't wear my Eddie Bauer down parka in any weather warmer than -20C.
BUT, I have been known to unzip the down-filled EB hood and wear that with another coat.
Looks stupid but I can ignore the cold.

I've learned very slowly that I need to cover the sides of my neck, including my ears.
Seems the case even in bed. Covering the top of my head isn't so important at all.

Try a bunch of different head gear even if you have to borrow some of it.
Trial and error.

Makes you look like a Canuck Scrooge?
:)

In winter, I need to cover my ears, and keep my cheeks and nose covered.
Old frost damage, itches like h€ll when exposed for cold, then the heat back here.
