A while back I saw a video , through this forum, of someone battoning through nuts and bolts and other various hard materials with a beast of a knife and the edge would still cut through paper like no business after the tests.

I've searched high and low on YouTube and internet but to no avail.
Have I dreamt this?
I dont remember it's name or maker's name but I remember it was either Italian or Turkish and the YouTube channel was called something like "steel research" or " knife innovation" "edge evolution" or something like that...
Does anyone here happen to know what knife this is?
I know this is a long shot , but with so much knowledge in the community , I thought I'd ask...
Thanks in advance.

No such thing as an indestructible knife :)

Hard steel, steeper bevels..... soft metals being cut through. Its not as impressive as it looks as that steep bevel will mean it won't hold an edge as well as finer grind would. You could do it with an 01 scandi, but the finer edge means it's likely to take a little damage

The company is called Moletta, Knife Research....

I believe they are Italian.

iv done it with o1 blades. like HillBill says its not that impressive or hard to do. a steep bevel on hard steel with a wide edge cutting mild steel...
the edge may well cut paper before and after but again a blade doesnt have to be that sharp to do that and with such a durable edge it wont hold a sharp edge for long or perform well generally.
whacking steel on steel will also work harden it!... it will break sooner or later! they just dont show that bit.

Spot on! That's it!!! 😁
The knife in question was the Knife research Rasul, and the video I was trying to find is this...

Thanks Hillbill

You must admit , that obviously you won't need to cut through nuts and bolts etc . on a Bushcraft outing but the edge retention on that bad boy means you don't have a nightmare getting dings out of the edge... ( I don't have a whetstone grinding wheel, just water stones).
I bet it would near on impossible to sharpen this thing though...

A friend of mine showed me a steelite (I think it's called) divers knife he had been issued in the 80's I think when he served in the royal marines and that thing was unbelievable , the edge was intact even after lots of abuse...

Again , thank you for finding that for me. I thought it was going to take forever to find it, and yet within two answers it was done.
The knowledge on this forum is just awesome.
Thanks HillBill👍

Diamond stones sharpen anything. :)

Also, the harder the steel, the more brittle it is. Vanadis 23 is a steel designed for stamping out things on machines... it will be a hard steel to sharpen as it is designed to have good toughness, and excellent wear resistance at higher hardness...That higher hardness... i believe it can go upto 66rc, means it won't be able to handle a finer grind found on scandis. It will chip out.

I have a piece of Vanadis 10 here come to think of it.

I think it might have been me that put the video up originally. Mik (Molleta) works both with Knife Research (who produced this Rasul in Vanadis 23 steel), and Lionsteel (again working with super steels, and winner of BladeShow this year with the Loinsteel KUR).

Mark, I'm loathe to call you on it, but my Rasul is flat ground to a very sharp bevel, I'll put some pictures up later. It carves and whittles perfectly well, there's nothing crude about the bevel, it's about the steel.

What is the angle of the secondary?

The knife in the vid could easily have had a steeper bevel than standard.. Only takes a minute or so to change the angles on secondaries.

Never said it would be crude... just steeper. :)

Can't really get a great pic of the edge, and as it's absolutely tipping down here I'm not going to find a stick just now. It'll feather wood very well. It's not a knife I'm afraid to use hard.

Droooooool.... That knife is a thing of beauty. 👍👍
Is it a Damascus steel? Or just the patina? The markings on the blade certainly look nice... Sorry if it's a silly question, I'm only a novice in steel works...

No problem, it's a Frenches American mustard patina. You'll also see the outline of a slice of orange in the first pic. I stopped with that, didn't like it. It's a cracking good knife, I love it.

I don't know if it's what you actually saw, but Lon Humphreys (an American maker) has made bideos sinilar to what you describe. I think it was a large W2 bowie he was using. I also have a W2 bowie by ABS master smith J. Neilson and it is awesome steel when good amiths get their hands on it.

J. Is a judge on the TV show 'forged in fire' and has to prove his knives can go through all the tests shown on the show. They include hamering through bolts, chopping ice and generally brutal tasks you'd never put a knife through, followed by sharpness tests.

So, if you're looking for a really tough knife contact one of these guys or similar. But these are extreme tests, and just 'cos the mnofe survives doesn't mean it should be used like that all the time.
