Anyone else intrigued by the spade Fowler is using?

I was not until you posted the question. As far as I can see it is just a spade but the edges have been sharpened so he could use it for chopping or hacking. it may be an army issue spade or copy

I've found that it's the cold steel copy of a Russian military item, and it's supposed to have a sharp edge as a hand to hand item. I remember the spade has been mentioned on the forum before, but I can't find any reference.

Just watched episode 10. I wont give anything away but I thought the contestants were all hard core this series except for maybe the guy (there always seems to be one) who taped out very early.

Just finished watching.

Yeah, particularly hope the people that came 3rd and 2nd get something out of the show other than just the experience.

Reading about it over on BCUSA Dave who won the last series says they're paid a 'stipend' whilst they're in the bush. I guess it's enough to cover loss of income etc

Wife livid at the result but after seeing the start/end photographs of the contestants faces agreed the doctor called an end to it almost perfectly.

It was a bit scary, the lass' bones were poking through her shirt when she was being weighed. Sad but that's the game. I can't find the reunion episode online yet.

I think each series builds the expectations of the competitors for the next series. Those that lasted the longest went in to it with a home making mentality rather than a survive the longest mentality, as proven by the guy who expounded the virtues of not doing anything and then got bored and tapped out. I was disappointed with "Mr PMA", and the young lad grated on me to be honest, but all the other contestants I did like in the end. Its a shame that in the end, it all boiled down to in the end, was whose bodies could endure starvation the most. Its great to see the homes they make for themselves as it's a step up from the S1 and 2 set ups. One thing that annoyed me about the show, the covering clothing logos; I bet more discussions occurred about that than the participants safety, but that's me being cynical.

Oh, and i bought the shovel!

It still strikes me as odd, in all three series they are near water yet all take minimum fishing gear, considering it could be a mainstay I would want to tackle up to the hilt, or at latest enough to give me the edge.

There are only two fishing items available on the list,
1 300-yard roll of nylon single filament fishing line and 25 assorted hooks (No lures)
1 small gauge gill net (12' x 4' with 1.5" mesh)
http://www.history.com/shows/alone/articles/gear-list
Though I agree, more fishing experience would definitely help.
I predict the winner next time will be an obese coarse fisherman, with an intimate knowledge of plants and roots!
