Not only are the hedgerows dripping with berries and hips, but it seems to be a mega year for nuts. The Beeches are loaded with mast, conkers everywhere, and a tidy little find while walking the dogs yesterday.

These came from a tiny tree, not a size I’d expect to be producing such good sized chestnuts.

Mind you, the weather’s so warm I don’t really need the burner alight, but I might just sweat it out this evening. I do love a fire roast chestnut, truly one of lifes little prizes.

Gratuitous fruit piccies.

Oh, go anyway. No snow? Get thee on thy road!!
My nearest reliable groves of unpicked Saskatoon berries are a 135 mile drive from here.
But when I go, I aim to come home with 20-25 lbs or more if I can get them.

Things are so bad that the Pacific Rim peanuts are crap and I have to order
from a single source supplier in the southern United States.

I can only dream of the sort of nut crops you all must get.

No car, motorcycle very poorly, I can't walk a 28 mile round trip due to spinal and mobility issues. So sadly this year no chestnuts for me.

Curried squirrel hind quarters is worth pondering.
Do those squirrels make nut caches that you could raid?
Here, our squirrels make cone caches from the spruce trees.
I've walked by some that might have been huge piles
of the better part of a cubic meter. Gigantic efforts.

First the poor squirrel works his butt off to stock up for winter, then you cook him and take his nuts....
:)

How do they taste like? Hare like? Rat maybe?

On Island 'we' have started the major Iguana cull, eradication attempt ( which will fail) and I expect some restaurants to start serving Iguanas.
Chicken of the trees.
