BcUK fly of the month March 2024

Welcome to the first monthly fly tying club for all members of BcUK. The idea is that each month we will come up with a different fly pattern. Then, people can have a go at tying their own interpretations and post their results here. Hopefully this will spark some discussion and inspiration for...

    Firewood pests and solutions…

Hi folks, I was enjoying the sun restocking and sorting the firewood today and I have noticed that I have somewhat of an infestation. The oak that I split and stacked back in the spring is suffering with beetle grub of some sort. I can’t find much online, but the cambium layer is turning to a...

    Adventure starts…

YouTube recommended this video to me this morning. I enjoyed it, and I’ve thought about this concept myself in the past. It might be fun to have a go at this next summer, I got to thinking about directions and equipment. So what would you do? Where would you go? And what would you take?

    Aquarium owners.

Since the last thread about terrariums went so well I thought I’d start a thread about aquariums, as I’m sure there must be a few fish keepers amongst us. I set this tank up for my daughter yesterday, and quickly rediscovered the joy of “aquascaping” (as the YouTubers now call it.) Looking...

    Doon grand tour.

It’s taken me a while to get round to uploading some pictures of this trip, but back in April some friends and I decided we would have a go at the loch Doon grand tour. For those who don’t know, this tour is around 18 miles of trad canoeing. Encompassing flat and moving water, long (and...

Modifications to the german army rucksack

I’ve been looking at canvas rucksacks for a while now, and whilst I’d really like an FR, funds aren’t in place at present. Fortunately, I saw the classic version of the German rucksack on sale for a very good price so I thought I’d take a punt on one. Given the fact the reviews were limited and...

BASC guidance for answering Welsh gamebird releasing consultation

I thought this could be an interesting discussion point and also there are likely a few people here who would be interested in responding to NRW. As always I think a careful and considered approach is needed when introducing any non native species into an environment...

    Composting toilets

I’m looking to get some advice on composting toilets. Work have asked me if I could put some on the fields for summer camping groups that we might have in now. I’m happy enough building the structure but I understand there are a few different options in terms of how to capture the waste...

    The “non-military” bivvy bag collection

Let’s share pictures and info on various bivvy bags that are not the bog standard British army issue here. Pros and cons, experiences as well as details on additional features. What else is out there folks??

    Videos auto play?

When someone embeds a YouTube video they seem to auto play when I scroll through a thread. I’ve had a look in settings and couldn’t find anything. Does anyone know how to/if I can turn this off? I’m just using safari on iOS to view the forums in case it’s in my phone settings…

    Mammoth graveyard

Just in case anyone has either missed it or is interested in a discussion there is a programme this evening on the mammoth graveyard in Swindon. Sir David is hosting, so should be quite a good one. I believe they are looking at the hunting’s practices of Stone Age man. BBC2 8pm.

    Bronze Age axe hoard

I just came across this article from a few days ago, probably a few people have already seen it but it’s incredible really. Found by young girl and her dad, that’s a story they will never forget! https://www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-beds-bucks-herts-59386261.amp What I...

Trip Report A few days in Scotland

Well, with fatherhood imminent I managed to persuade my wife to allow me one last taste of freedom. We agreed that Galloway was close enough that I could get back if anything happened (it didn’t) and I decided to have 2 nights on Loch Ken. :beerchug: I arrived late afternoon after getting held...

    Badger poop..

Yep. This is an entire thread about some poop I found today, good and fresh too. It looks like this badger has been enjoying some beetles. I have for a long time ignored learning badgers in favour of the red fox, but I see far more evidence for badger these days. They’re a complex creature.

    New towing regulations

I’ve just read that the regulations for towing are changing soon. Those that passed their test post 1997 will now be allowed to tow up to 3.5 ton gvm, so caravans and larger trailers etc. I believe this is in a bid to try and get more HGV drivers on the road do to a shortage, but I’m not sure...

    The Gods must be crazy

I’m not sure if anyone is interested but I recall watching this film when I was younger. I was recently telling CLEM about it and I remembered how funny it was especially the scenes with the Land Rover and the tracking. I’m sure other members have seen it and will remember it better than I. If...
