Hammocks, is longer and wider better?

I've not used a hammock before and have a choice of two. I'm 5'7", 170 lbs, side sleeper. One hammock is 320 x 170cm, and the other is 270 x 140cm. Any thoughts? I like the idea of the bigger one because I've read bigger is better for side sleeping; but it lacks the double skin (I'll use a mat...

    Ticks and Hammocks

Where I have been going for winter bushcamping will be prime tick ground now (leaf litter and loads of deer). So far I've been sleeping in a bivi bag under a tarp. Is a hammock a good way to avoid ticks locking on in the night?

Are all 900 down bags the same?

Based on materials and construction (not rating), is there any reason that one of these 3 sleeping bags should be warmer than the others? 1. Alpkit 900 https://alpkit.com/collections/sleeping-bags/products/skyehigh-900 2. Rab 900...

    Water Purification

I'm wondering about getting a water purifier in a black Friday deal. I don't know anything about water purification other than 30 years ago I used a hand pump when bike touring in Chile. Any suggestions for current effective methods or kit? I'll be doing it in the UK. Perhaps something like...

Hunka vs British Army bivi bag

Has anyone used the alpkit hunka bivi bags and got any pros/cons? I'm torn between getting a Hunka XL or a British Army "goretex" one. I'll be using it in winter with a 7cm mat (inside) and 4 season sleeping bag. The Hunka is half the weight but theoretically less waterproof/breathable/durable.

    Does damp make a difference?

I just spent the night out in my new snugpak elite 4 sleeping bag rated comfortable -10°c. I used a spacious bivi bag and a decent thermarest mat. I wore a moreno wool base layer and a hat. I had a tarp set up as standard A over me. The grpund was already soaking. I went to bed warmish. There...

    Poles for macpac bivi

Has anyone got any spare poles for an old macpac cocoon bivi? Or where I could get some (I've emailed macpac)? Or an alternative replacement?

    Bivi bag condensation

How much condensation should I expect on the inside of a bivi bag? Last night I slept my first night out in a bivi bag (in the garden!) I'm in the UK. There was a heavy dew and overnight lows were 7°c/ 45°f. My face was completely out of the bag. I was cosy warm but not hot. Inside of bivi was...

    Ridge line and Prusik knot

Hi, I am buying cord for a ridge line onto which I'll attach a tarp with prusik knots. I believe prusiks work when they are of thinner cord than the cord they are attaching too. So I was thinking to buy 550 paracord (5mm) for the ridgeline and kombat paracord for the prusiks (3mm). Is this a...

    Down or Synthetic

I am looking at buying a new sleeping bag for the winter. I'll be sleeping on a thermarest venture mat with a macpac cocoon bivi under a basha. I've read about down being affected by damp yet it is so much lighter and smaller than synthetic. Is the damp really that much of a concern for down bags?
