Suitable magnifying glass for fire starting?

Some above have already mentioned but just want to clear it up - Magnification has nothing to do with it. A jeweler's loupe is not a good choice. A larger diameter lens collects more light/photons and is therefore more powerful.

    Swimming with camping gear

Thanks for all the replies and sorry for the delay in replying. I was actually camping on an island. But I went by canoe and just did some short swims. I wasn't trying to show off with my ability, just trying to avoid the 'please wear armbands' replies. There are 2 things which rule out a lot...

    Swimming with camping gear

I do a lot of canoe camping on islands, mainly up in Scotland. I also do a lot 'wild' swimming and would like swim out to some islands and camp the night. Much easier than transporting and preparing a boat. Before I get lectured - I am an experienced swimmer. And I can swim about a mile in 9°C...

I think MCQ has started a new channel. About his new 80 metre Super yacht.

    Tarp for van awning

Thanks for the link. The reason I was asking is because I have no idea what the strengths 'feel' like. Your link is for 15kg. Another above is 22kg. Amazon do a 770kg, I guess that would be ott. The ones called 'fishing magnets' have a ring bolt attached, which would be handy for pulling off...

    Tarp for van awning

I'm going to get some magnets. I'm not being lazy, just want to be sure - Can anyone link me to the right ones on Amazon? I can't use eBay. I bought a c-rail but the magnetic idea is more positively attractive. Would be appreciated. I'm in a bit of a flux at the moment.

    Survival foods

Thanks for all the recommended reading. It will take me a bit of time to go through it all, but gives me plenty of homework. I would never have searched under famine foods. Lots of results there. I'm a bit sceptical when it comes to plants. I'm a big eater. I had another snake last week. It...

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-46671224 Has anyone got any similar links to survival foods? Or maybe books - but for survival foods, not just wild plants. Thanks.

    Hand drill floating no notch

20200531_164906 by Hola Siesta, on Flickr Thanks for the replies. I have been trying to get a decent picture of a drill ember. No luck. If I light up the drill, to get it to focus, the glowing red doesn't show, only black. Attached a photo of an older, blurred picture. Mullein.

    Hand drill floating no notch

SPOILER ALERT! There are no knives for sale in this post. Sorry. With time on my hands (bad pun) I decided to try some of the harder, more awkward ways of getting an ember. Split stick, no notch, single hole, double hole and a few others. I couldn't find much use for them, other than having...

    Of potential and baskets

 I think this is the thumbs up sign. There is a similar middle finger one. It's not meant to be that one. On my phone they are too small to differentiate.

    Cattail ( Typha Latifolia )

I tried to get some roots a couple of months ago but the water was low which exposed the sandy bottom. This was frozen solid, so no digging and no food. I had to forage for a pot noodle instead. (Typha chow mein). But I did manage to get a few stems and make a few hand drill embers on the spot...

The nuthatchs have now started on the fat ball and walnuts I put out. So that takes the pressure off a bit.

    Ground nuts

I am in an area with lots of walnuts on the ground. I assume from last September/October. I can easily open them with my fingers which means they a probably not sealed. I've been opening them for the birds which has made me very popular. Are they safe to eat? They are easy to open and lying on...

    Quinzee snow shelter 2020

Quinzee march2020 by Hola Siesta, on Flickr Another night in a quinzee. The views were amazing. I am so used to getting up and moving, just to stay warm. But my last few nights out, I just sat around with lots of hot drinks and my binos.
