    Dave Canterbury Sad News

Fair enough sir. Yes it does sound hard. I was looking at it on a sliding scale of potential life experiences. My years of work in addictions has brought me into peoples deep private pain re: any number and type of abuses, suicide, violence, etc.......... I lived on a far northern fly in...

    Mors Kochanski - Sad News

Sad news indeed. I lived and played in some of his original Boreal locations. But I'm sure that his little finger retains more outdoor knowledge and skill than my entire accumulated experience.

    Five pound sharpening kit

Lovely thread that I will have to review again later. I have moved no further than using my Lansky kit on occasion, to change edge angles. And I do 90% of my sharpening on a Spyderco Sharpmaker. When I can cleanly slice printer paper I'm done. I have never used a strop. I feel like a fly in...

Best knife steel for prying and toughness/hardness?

I have to look hard for justification to carry it actually. It's the one tool compromise that isn't a good knife or hatchet, but can serve both roles to a degree. It was replaced with a Mora Pro c Robust and Fiskars hatchet (a little Wetterlings may still replace that) in my small bag a few days...

Best knife steel for prying and toughness/hardness?

Here is my latest toy. 1/4 inch 5160. It is heavy and rusts just by looking at it.....I have never let a lack of skills get in the way of my Neanderthal like wanderings.

Hultafors mini hatchet - any good?

I have a hand digging tool that I use for metal detecting. It was originally designed as a Tulip bulb planter. But it looks very much like a long wide knife. I have seen a lot of cautious reactions to that. I try to keep it sheathed when not in use and that helps. Human nature I suppose.

Hultafors mini hatchet - any good?

Very interesting thread, thank you all. I am in Canada (I haven't been here for a year or two because I got heavily into metal detecting) and I was considering a Hultafors mini hatchet. But most North Americans don't seem familiar with it. I already have many of the axes/hatchets mentioned. My...

Axe and/or saw, what do I not understand?

I take what I need dependent on length of stay, and I base my tools off those used by the Fur Traders that lived and traveled in my region.

Does anyone have a Condor Mini Bushlore knife?

Interesting thread, as I have been considering the mini also. I have the regular Bushlore and quite like it. The closest thing that I have to a neck knife today are some ESEE Izula 2's. I really like those little things.

Applying Linseed oil to a knife handle.

I suppose different folks can have different experiences. I never saw the once a day for a week application as feasible, for myself. But then I really gave first applications of boiled Linseed oil a pretty wet slathering. Not dripping, but a liberal application on my Hickory handles. This first...

    Which hatchet?

Pulled the toe and finger removers out for size perspective re: Husqvarna hatchet. Sorry about the weak pictures, the camera is getting old.

    Esee 5

Thank you sir. My wife and I are going to vacation in the Boreal forest soon. I have no idea which toys/tools to take up there this time. I played around with the Fiskars hatchet, a SAK, and a silly big Becker BK-5 last year. I find it fun sometimes to just indulge in my outdoors fantasies now...

    Open invitation arctic meet 2017

As a challenge/recreational activity, I can see the attraction, particularly for the younger man. I still go out for a nippy afternoon hike, or a day ice fishing in a tent now and then. But many winters here can have a severe period, and it just gets old after a while. Hot stew, a warm clean...

    Esee 5

I understand. I wore a Becker BK-2 one summer/fall several years ago while metal detecting in the Boreal forest. I considered it a good compromise cutting/splitting tool to initiate a quick fire, in a small package. It is long gone but I have considered the ESEE 5 now and then. Agreed, not for...

    Which hatchet?

I am far from an expert on hatchets. But I have a few and play with them. Stihl, Wetterlings, Fiskars, and I can"t find pics of my Husqvarna, which I like a lot. The smallest Fiskars are quite fun to use also, and weigh nothing. I have an old video somewhere (I got a nice Hultafors etc. since I...

What do you carry on your sheath.

I carry nothing on my sheaths unless it has a pocket. Then it is usually a tin with fire making materials in it, that"s it. I detest a weighty knife/sheath system. I also always have a Swede fire steel covered in silicone rubber then pushed into a clear fuel line. It has remained...

Is that full tang Mora available yet ?

Spot on buddy. I likely have 30-40 knives left, some machetes and 7-10 axes/hatchets. I have gone through the prestige stage, the hunt for great steel stage, the Swedish axe stage, ESEE, Spyderco etc. These days I am more interested in functionality and my version of aesthetics. If my...

    Condor Bushlore

Howdy gents. I tried off and on to grab a Condor Bushlore from my preferred vendor for a year or two, when I remembered it once again. I finally got one sent in and I like it, but I have given it next to no use due to life demands. What is your opinion of this cutting tool ?
