The curse of the video camera - a rant!

I find youtube a useful resource. I have been introduced to bushcraft techniques that I have never encountered before through it and I owe the fact that I can tie a decent range of knots to posters on youtube as well. Some of the videos do show a lack of skill and concern for safety, however...

    Waste and Dishonour

    Wise words.

    Quackwatch

Toddy is a smart cookie at times. I think that is the most sensible post I have ever seen someone make in one of these kinds of threads. People usually end up grinding their own axes rather than sharing some wisdom.

    my scrimshawed knife finished.

    Neanderthal diet

No worries Rik, we are entitled to different points of view and yes we are lucky to have easy access to a varied diet.

    Neanderthal diet

I agree that people should take responsibility for what they are eating, I don't think anyone would disagree with that given the assumption of free-will. However, certain big players in the food industry are exploiting scientific research into how our reward systems react to certain foods...

    British Wet Weather Camping Tips!

Thanks for the tip, I'll give it a shot. Plenty of opportunity to this summer. :D It's sharp and it's only a cheap mora so I'm not too worried about smashing the "bejeezus" out of it. :)

Shelter build out in the woods, today(pic heavy)

Nice idea to weave branches for the thatching and extra strength rather than tying cross poles on.

    camping sucks

Some of the best advice I was given when I first started out was that I should take actions to stay warm before I begin to feel the cold. Some tips for the OP: Bring lots of layers rather than one or two thick pieces of clothing then in the evening as the temperature drops, begin adding...

    Cloak/blanket/poncho options...

Thanks for those links. Also, on the off chance she reads it, thanks to Toddy for the Birrus Britannicus pattern. I've been looking for something like this.

    Neanderthal diet

Interesting article. But with regard to the fad diet: I try and stay away from foods that are processed by companies that don't really care about my well-being. On the other hand, I also steer clear of the folks who are trying to sell me a solution to that problem. Both parties are worthy...

    DIY Underblanket

Your UB is looking good, the only improvement I can think of is that I've seen people put a toggle on the shockcord halfway down each of the long sides so that you can raise and lower the UB while lying in the hammock to regulate its position and the temperature.

    A night in the woods

Enjoyed that, thanks for the post. Digging with the axe won't do it much good either but then again if I was starving I'd probably be trying to use the least amount of calories to dig too.

Newby bushcrafter needs area suggestions :)

Isn't carrying far too much gear on your first trip like a rite of passage for all bushcrafters? ;) Once you've done a trip with 15-20kg of stuff, most of which you don't need, you learn to appreciate getting the weight down to 5-10kg in a small pack on future trips. It is always a source of...

A Few Hours Out - Finally

Lovely spot for a brew. Usually end up leaving sites with a lot more than I went there with these days too unfortunately. I always chuckle when I realise the next group to use the spot won't even realise I've cleaned up everyone's mess but I like to think and offer some silent thanks to...

Looking for ideas for an 'awfully big adventure', just not too far from Glasgow

I've not done much camping west of the Trossachs yet but one place nearish to Glasgow I've always had an eye on is up around Inverary. Taking a look at it on Google Maps throws up many possible places not too far from the town and if I remember correctly the bus to Oban used to stop there so...

Do You Feel a Spiritual Connection with the Woods?

Havn't you heard? Plants invented animals to move them around more efficiently! :lmao:

Do You Feel a Spiritual Connection with the Woods?

I get those feelings when out in the woods or on the hills, it is a privilege to be out in or on them. I couldn't agree more with this, was camping on the edge of a plantation earlier in the week and felt nothing, although the midgies and all the litter didn't help.

Can an axe replace a saw and a knife?

I go with a mora and a small cheapo pruning saw. I saw up small diameter lengths and split with the mora and a baton. Total cost was less than £20 and I've never been in a situation where I couldn't make adequate firewood without the axe. I'd recommend trying without the bowie and going for...
