    Anyone using a BCUK Spyderco?

I bought one of these over 10 years ago because the handle was simply gorgeous. It hasn't seen a huge amount of use but I used it yesterday to gralloch a roe deer. Blade got quite badly chipped on the bones so I've been spending some time today fixing it Just wondered if anyone else was...

    Second willow basket

Went on a paid course on Saturday. Took 6 hours to create this. Very proud of what I've achieved. We were running out of time at the end so the handle is a bit rushed but it's sturdy and functional. About 40cm across. I've just sorted last year's harvest to length and will be soaking some soon.

A cheaper way to buy fabric

Wanted some cotton to make facemasks with. To buy it by the metre worked out at about £3/square metre. Bought a brand new King sized flat sheet (over 9m2) for just under £10. I don't know if this is something you can get at charity shops (I needed a specific colour as it's for a uniformed group)...

    An improvised firelighter

Got downstairs this morning and it's freezing cold and fire wasn't lit. Turns out that there is no kindling in the house and the nearest stock is 100m away in the barn. Wanted to get the fire going and didn't fancy the trek outside in my jim jams. I've been doing some sewing recently (making...

    Reversible pouch

Following on from my post about making a hidden seam lined box pouch, I realised the same technique would apply to my normal lined EDC pouches. I don't have any reversible zip pulls (yet) but reckon this has applications if you want to remain stealthy or having something that's easy to find in a...

    Hidden seam lined box pouch

I follow a channel called "thejasonofalltrades" on YouTube - he's an American who does outdoorsy type sewing videos. He recently posted one where he made a simple pouch out of some material he'd had printed, and mentioned that he'd like to make a lined one but hasn't figured out how to do it...

    Upcycled hi-viz jacket pouch

I had a hi-viz waistcoat issued by my company but the branding has now changed so I can't use it. I spent an enjoyable hour this morning picking it apart and then sewed up this little pouch using the retroreflective stripes for the outer and the yellow fabric for the lining. Should be easy to...

    Trip Report A rude awakening

My preferred hammock spot has trees that are a bit more widely spaced than ideal so I have to put my straps up high and there's a lot of tension on the whoopie slings as they're still pretty flat. With it being so hot in the UK at the moment, I decided to hang last night but didn't set up until...

To stock or not to stock, that is the question

I have a fairly large pond (1/2 acre) which we use for swimming and wildlife. I'd like to be able to eat fish (trout) from it but I've heard that they're not good for other wildlife, presumably because they predate on insects, tadpoles etc. We have a heron visiting quite often but the pond is...

    Mystery item (not mine)

Saw this on Facebook - wondered if anyone might know what it is: https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/item/904873456725291

    Upcycled inner tube coin purse

Stopped by a local motorcycle garage this evening and picked up an inner tube (was after something they were chucking out but it was still inflated and seems pretty new). After looking for some inspiration on Etsy, I made this simple little coin purse with it: Think I need to change my needle...

A really weird tip for sharpening scissors that worked for me

My fabric scissors are good quality vintage ones but they wouldn't cut properly anymore. I'd tried whetstones, adjusting the screw and honing with my Spyderco Sharpmaker but despite slicing through paper or multiple layers of fabric with ease, cutting a single layer of fine cotton just wasn't...

    Killing the fire

It was the right thing to do, it was the responsible thing to do, but pouring water on what had been such a happy, warming, lively fire that had fed us, kept us warm and entertained us tonight whilst we put the world to right (as much as 6 middle aged white straight men could do...) felt...

Bartack on domestic (vintage) sewing machine

Having fixed my vintage zig-zag sewing machine (see here) thought I'd see how capable it was. Loaded thread and bobbin with 40s/TKT40 bonded Nylon and grabbed an old seatbelt that I'd previously sewed on an industrial machine (with green thread). The new bar tacks are at the top of the...

    RTFM!!

I bought a vintage sewing machine (Pinnock SewQueen) from an auction a couple of years ago. Paid virtually nothing for it and typically for machines of that era (1950's?) it's all metal. However, I'd struggled to sew with it, kept jamming up, so I haven't really used it a great deal (wanted it...

    RFID resistant EDC pouch

I make lots of these with different fabrics. This one is heavyweight linen look ripstop Nylon outer, with lightweight ripstop inner. There's also aluminium foil in between the layers (which makes it a bit stiff, but I'm going to look into using Mylar). A brief test showed it effectively blocks...

    Upcycled notepad cover

Was making a new garden swing cover and although the old fabric is dirty, it's still sound. Decided to make a little notebook cover from it (sewed the notebook too as I didn't have one at hand). Quite like the distressed/vintage look although for the next one I'll double roll the seams to make...

Should boots last more than 5 months?

Bought some, admittedly cheap, work boots (https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/264653595405) and the soles have already come off, the steel midsole has snapped on one of them too. The uppers are OK and the soles have plenty of life left in them - don't hold much hope of getting my money back but don't...

    Just ate some rat bait...

My wife has had an issue with rats in her car - they've chewed through the wiring loom twice now and although they seem to have taken a bag of poisoned bait, I'd like to see the bodies so I've left a couple of spring traps in there. Needed something sticky enough to jam onto the prongs and...

Guess why this is (probably unique)?

Decided to camp out last night so put my hammock up. Can you guess why none of you have probably hammocked like this before? Edit: won't even let me link images from my own hosting... http://creffield.com/pics/bushcraft/hammock.jpg
