I don't know about a tatty, but if you slice an onion with it, you'll get a nice irridescent sort of effect, a bit like colour case hardening.

Why not have one custom made. If you go to British Blades and track down Tiffers (won't take long, she's one of the mods), she works as a saddler I think, and has a reputation for making very good quality belts.

If you just want to colour the surface of the steel, try rubbing it with half an onion, then letting it dry before oiling it, I think this gives a nice "patina" on steel, but you may want to try it on something first to see if you like it, I dicovered the effect by accident after slicing an...

I think it is also important to remember that leather is a natural material and that is part of it's appeal. I would also recommend getting hold of some surgical gloves to protect your hands if you're doing a bit of dyeing, as it turns out my hands are covered with a leather like material...

I'd have thought it is from when the axe head is quenched after heating, I know the blades I've quenched in oil come out with a black/grey coating on the surface.

If you scar the bark, (run a the edge of a chainsaw down the side of the tree) it will produce loads of resin, I've seen paths through plantations marked this way, as the resin is white. Just don't go mad, and I'm sure you'll get plenty of it.
