Mine arrived today. Thanks John. To reply to your question: No, I won't be around in September. I'll be in New Zealand as I'm just popping over for a Steely Dan concert in Christchurch (as well as to spend some time with my daughter out there in that green and pleasant land) but I will be...

Well, actually it's: gator - either of two amphibious reptiles related to crocodiles but with shorter broader snouts or gaiter - A cloth covering (a legging) that covers the instep and ankles Remember this is a thread for pedants

    Sheath or Sheaf?

Many people seem to think that evolving implies improving whereas in fact it means changing better to fit the prevailing conditions. I think the onus is on the naysayers here to prove that current English language trends are degenerate. As an example, take the use of "wicked" to mean "rather...

Protecting the blade of a hook-knife?

I just split a piece of wood http://www.bushcraftuk.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=190&cat=500&ppuser=1961 in half and cut a groove in both halves to match the shape of the knife and used a bit of dowel to join the two halves again. Not my idea, the scandinavian chappie leading the Woodlore...

    home made smoker

That would be Jimmy Doherty who started the Essex Pig Company but I can't find anything about a smoker. Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall also made a smoker from an oil drum and there is a bit about it in The River Cottage Cookbook but more about smoking than building one I'm afraid.

Actually, I believe I recall him saying that similar devices are still in use by various aboriginal peoples so I reckon crafting a berry picker ought to become the next standard bushcraft project...

    One for the makers......I'm Curious?

I've often admired Magnus Axelson's products. This rather nice Damascus blade with Ironwood and mammoth ivory is slightly above your price but much of his stuff is half the price and quite as beautiful. He hasn't got prices on his website but it's well worth a look just for the dribble factor.

It's an ill wind that blows nobody any good ...

and, although I'm aware of the awful personal tragedies that last week's storm produced for some people, I just have to tell you that I have greatly enjoyed sawing and chopping branches off a very old apple tree that has been blown over at the bottom of my garden. I am pleased with myself that...

    Leather laces....?

You could try Ian's secure knot. It seems to be a matter of pushing the righthand loop through the middle after the lefthand loop. Known as a double slip knot but doesn't slip at all.

    Inverpolly Forest

Something has been puzzling me since I downloaded this month's wallpaper from the ordnance survey site. They have landscape scenes from around Britain and November's is apparently Inverpolly Forest. But there aren't any trees!! Cartographers do not spring to mind as the best examples of the...
