Buff, shemagh, bandana and other which do you own

I think the pic answers that one. Marvellous for the regions it originated in, light weight, you get a cool breeze through it and it can keep the dust out of your nose and mouth. Also got bandanas though :)

    I've discovered a problem...

Doing a cordage making demo (probably almost all Nettle) at a local wildlife reserve on Sunday. Handling a Bernie Garland 'Little Whittler' blank at the moment.. slow going because I don't have access to power tools but mercifully found a neighbour has a pillar drill to drill out the holes for...

    Millbank Bags

Got mine years ago from Life Support Training Services up in Millom. I don't know if they have a website or still sell them but what I can say about them is something they mentioned on their Expedition skills course years ago, that was to never trust a ceramic filter because you don't know if...

    Bush hats

Buy a Tilley T3 if you don't have one. As an all rounder I don't think they can be beaten.

    Birch Polypore.... Tinder?

That's Ganoderma Applanatum (Artist's Fungus, Artist's Conk) etc. you can mark the white areas with a stick and it produces a brown colour that is darker the harder you press it. Yes the Trama layer of this fungus can be processed into Amadou. It's hard work though and is not supposed to be as...

    Yew Berries

Probably not a great idea to concentrate any small amounts of Taxine which may be in the juice like this. Remember there is still no specific antidote for Taxine poisoning.

    fishing tackle advice

A nice old piece of kit but not popular to fish with these days due to the weight and the fact that the old eyes don't take modern fly lines which tend to be much thicker. To give you an idea a modern carbon composite rod which weighs a fraction of your rod and is a lot stronger can be had for...

GTX or not GTX, that is the question?

Oh and man do those things bruise your shins. I remember coming down in the snow whilst up in the highlands once and I was grunting through gritted teeth each step of the way... I wasn't all that talkative or friendly on that trip down :)

    After Armageddon

    Crocs

I hated them but had never had a pair, never liked the looks etc. but I was away on holidays and constantly got sand under the straps of my Tevas and it wore some huge blisters into my feet. I was SO glad to get a pair of Crocs locally. Very comfortable and without that particular problem.

Horse Chestnut trees - other options to felling

Yep, I've always heard that Beech can drop it's branches unpredictably. As a matter of fact, I was driving my Uncle home to his farm years ago and a Beech branch came down and cracked the windscreen. There were moderate winds that night and luckily it just clipped the windscreen at the top and...

    Bergans of Norway

Well, that's where the name Bergan comes from (army pack). Been sound a while. Don't know about current stuff though.
