Snugpak Elite 3 not very warm

Agreed that a lot of sleeping bag manufacturers are optimistic with their ratings - some of them to the point of fanciful. Keeping warm all night is an art form. My personal take on it is hot water bottles. Lots of them. And preferably an arctic bag, but with hot water bottles in my arctic...

The Uninitiated but keen to see the cold.

How are you going to get there/move around? On foot? Vehicle? For a first attempt I'd say that it's a tall order if you're restricted to just what you can carry and I'd urge caution. If you have a vehicle it's *much* easier to carry what you need to look after yourself. I really wouldn't...

    All weather coating…

The same thing is happening to the scales of an old folder of mine. Judging by the amount of black crud which collects in my handkerchief I think probably the best way to get it all off will be to keep it in your pocket.

    Hello from Golden, CO, USA

Welcome notajerryskid. Like some others here I'm jealous too. Not so much of how close you are to Spyderco, but of how close you are to a forest that's bigger than my home - England. Haven't been to Colorado for decades, but every time I see bits of it in a movie I want to go back there.

    Copper Bracelet Wearers

After I told my sister that i'd been having a bit of arthritis trouble, last Christmas she gave me a brass bangle that she inherited from my mother, which I'd forotten about but which I knew my mother used to wear in the hope that it might help with her aches and pains. I wore it for about six...

    Where are the butterflies?

Not long ago as it seems to me now, my prospective father-in-law and I were talking about the developments taking place in an area behind his house in Ripley, Derbyshire, which we called "forty horse". We were both sorry to see the area's ecosystem being destroyed by yet more road-building. At...

    Adam from JLT Knives

FWIW I'm pretty sure his name is Adam Peters (search for 'Adam "JLT Kinves"') but I know nothing of his well-being and current whereabouts. In the matter of the missing funds, unless you started the process years ago it's much too late now to go to the County Court. For most debts there's a...

    Tape

You need two things in your tool kit. A hammer, and duct tape. If it doesn't move, and it should, you use the hammer. If it does, and it shouldn't, you use the duct tape. Personally, if only briefly (last week), I've have had good experience of mending roof leaks with this stuff: MrHelper...

    Alcohol stove/twig burner combination

Just a word of warning, when I tried running a meths burner in an IKEA hobo stove the whole lot was glowing red by the time the fuel ran out. I think there's a photo of it somewhere on here, it was at a meet in Derbyshire, I believe at Shining Cliff (Ambergate) but it might have been at the...

    Old'ish sheffield bowie type knife

Hi, and what a pleasant surprise to be talking to the grandson of the famous maker! (I don't know what happened with my earlier attempt, the wife got involved and things went awry...) The picture that I posted is back in place so you should be able to see it by clicking the link in my original...

Aaagghh. I can see the thumbnail Steve, looks great and I can see it's 760-odd kBytes, but I can't get the full resolution image. Yes I am logged in. "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later." What's that about? How do you attach an image anyway? When I try to do...

Dammit I just logged in to say that as it's going to be sub-zero I'll be coming down tonight for an overnighter and it's cancelled! Season's greetings to everyone -- I hope all's well, especially with those of you who had to pull out for health reasons. Ged.

    Cleaning a Norgie

You might have luck with the stuff that I use to clean the glass on a wood-burning fire. I think it's basically a strong caustic soda paste. It comes in a plastic bottle so it shouldn't harm your lid. It's amazing what it does for the fire glass.

    I'm after a pot..

Wasn't this about pots? I've had some decent non-stick sets of three nesting pots (one is a frying pan/lid) pretty cheap (like six or seven quid, can't remember) from Aldi or Lidl. You have to watch out for them as they're only on sale now and again. I expect you can get them all year round...

A Quick & Easy Night Navigation Trick using the Stars...The LURD Method

Sorry, I shouldn't be so flippant about something that's so important. I meant that you really need to think about this but in the end it's just geometry. Suppose that you're in England looking at the pole star. The stars 'above' it are moving from right to left. The start 'below' it are...

    SAK blade snapping?

I've broken lots of tools that nobody here would be interested in. I broke a German stainless machete which snapped clean when I battened with it. The blow that broke it was fairly gentle, with a tree branch of green willow about 2" diameter. Practically no bending force on the blade. I was...
