    First aid kit

Good advice, well found. Just for ref is says to treat within 20mins of the injury. Here is my take on cling film in a wilderness setting. I am a strong advocate of it but it is not to be used with impunity.

A couple of articles on Medicines

I've written a couple of articles for our site on Medicines. It is a subject that occasionally raises it head on this forum so hopefully this will shed some light. Medicines - Licensing. What are the controls and restrictions on various medicnes and how does this affect us? Medicines -...

    New jacket help!

How about the Westwinds Airedale? Similar price. I've always thought it was quite a nice looking jacket - certainly acceptable on the high street - but I would begrudge thrashing a £200 jacket in the woods from new.

    First Aid Newsletter

We have been writing and collating articles on First Aid for some time now. We've been using the likes of Twitter and Facebook to keep people informed but have recently started an email Newsletter. To avoid spam, this requires you to submit your email and then reply to the automated email we...

    Cling film?

Thanks for the input - I'm always ready to learn more ;-) As I understand it both products are polyethylene (although some 'cling film' brands are still PVC) which has been heated (hence 'sterilized'), stretched and then rolled in a clean environment. Food grade cling film is not actually...

    Cling film?

All clingfilm-like products are inherently sterile as a consequence of the manufacturing process; food grade or indeed 'medical grade' clingfilm is not treated or tested. Strech-wrap, like clingfilm, cannot be guaranteed sterile because it is not stored appropriately...but it is as clean as...

    Cling film?

All good stuff and fully concur, with the exception that I would just put one layer (again, a loose covering not a 'wrap'). Cling film is also a good insulator and you want the heat out of the wound. You can continue to cool with running water in place. Cling film gained favour as a burn...

    A Warning Re Quikclot

8-| The safety pin method was openly published in Peter Steele's Medical Handbook for Walkers and Climbers, which was, for a long time my favoured remote medical handbook, but times move on. To degrade to efficacy of the recovery position on an open, public forum or lay-people is not just...

    General First Aid

I think I'm right in saying the same is true in Sweden where, in addition, your car will fail its MOT if it does not have a FAK, warning triangle, blanket, torch etc in the boot. I'd welcome both of those in the UK.

    General First Aid

Short answer is some is better than none but if you want to put a bit more thought into it here are a couple of points: 1. Find a course that is geared to the outdoors rather than, say, the 1 day Emergency First Aid at Work course or the 3 Day First Aid at Work courses. Not that they are bad...

    First Aid

100% agree with you BoonDoc; It's all about the hands-on practice. Whether it is a one-day introduction or a Wilderness Medic course, practical skills need practical training. Also the topics covered on any courses only really make sense when taken out of the classroom and put into a contextual...

    A Warning Re Quikclot

SP Services are also selling the FAST 1 Intraosseous Infusion device as well as a pocket emergency cricothyrodotomy kit. I've seen them both used on the telly so might buy one of each for my FAK. Just in case ;-)

Thanks for the info BrainM. Being told 'yes' or 'no' is one thing, being told why is so much more useful. Cheers.

    headtorchs wots a good one

As Hoodoo says, it is basically power output and build quality (although the second point is not universal; we all know of really good value products which are better made than some of their more expensive counterparts). I have a Silverlight Pro Guide headtorch as a spare in the van. 150...

    headtorchs wots a good one

Possibly - I don't know! Cree Inc is one of the companies that make these new generation high power LEDs. Luxeon is another brand (or is it a model even?) - I just use the term 'cree' for High Power LED. Sloppy and bad form! I am sure there must be a proper term but I don't know what it is.

    headtorchs wots a good one

I would always recommend the Petzl Myo XP. The rrp is around £70 but you can always find it much less with a bit of googling; £42 at Go Outdoors A lot more than the Gamma but once you've had Cree you never go back ;)! 85 lumens on full plus a 'burst' up to 150 lumens when you hold...
