    Tarp/Tent Pegs

Hard to describe but here goes - I use Y shaped pegs (when looked at end-on). I have drilled a small hole in one of the fins to take a loop of paracord. I will try the luminous loops out during next season and see how they fare with regard to dirt, wear and ongoing visibility.

    Tarp/Tent Pegs

Sudden flash of inspiration!!! You can get the packs of louminous (?) guy lines quite cheaply these days. How about cutting short lengths and tieing loops to your pegs? Brightly coloured by day and reflective under tourch light by night. This probably won't stop certain persons tripping on your...

    Recognised Bushcraft/Survival Skills qualifications?

IMHO In your specific position, you could do a lot worse than to join IOL (Institute for Outdoor Learning), join their Bushcraft/Survival special interest group and sign up to one of John Ryders (level 3 or above) courses. Like me, I don't think you will regret it. Even taking into account...

    Tarpology Knots

I like what you are saying Rich. I am aiming to get a larger tarp over the winter (I currently use an '8 tarp) and am looking at the separate ridgeline/tarp setup scenario. I am a big fan of knots and only use Ribena's to act as a drip loop on my DD (my Hennesy has a snakeskin). Any comments...

    Tarpology Knots

Great tutorial Chris, As an adendum. I tend to leave my ridgeline attached to my tarp. When packing I fold the whole thing and roll toward the ridge and then leave one end of my ridgeline (always the same one) hanging out of the bag. I then wrap this around the bag and tuck the end under...

    Birch Tar

I've done it once, just for the hell of it! Filled a 1kg Quality street tin (with a hole in the bottom middle) the with bark curled in a circle or concentric circles (apparently ensuring that the bark was all up the same way it was on the tree). Dug a small hole to take a tin mug and set the...

    Hammock questions

My thoughts on hammocks. IMO the carrabina is a must. If for nothing else to act as a drip loop in bad weather to stop the rain running down the line and soaking the top and tail of your hammock. I tend to place my pack at my head end, on the floor under the hammock. If it all goes wrong my...
