    More carboot tools

I think I prefer a back fid. Push the tool through a hawser between the ropes (it is tight) grab the end of a wire or serving with the serrated tip, tighten down with the ring to grasp it tight and pull the tool and wire back through. I have done it with a Swedish fid on a Marlow plaited hawser...

    More carboot tools

I think the 'screwdriver thingy' is a deburring tool. Slip the tapered body into a cut copper pipe, lock the blade to the angle you need with the ring and twist the blade around the outside edge. You will be left with a nice taper to enter into the gland or fitting. Is the blade sharpened a...

There is a new 'reduced salt cube' but I am told the original 'stock cube' continues.

Growing early ( as in Iron Age/ Saxon ) food plants?

By 'line of argument' I was also thinking of all the other factors that affect growth and yield: Day length, moisture, temperature, humidity, wind force, nutrients, trace minerals, root support, CO₂ levels and on and on and on. Many centuries of bioengineering have given us crops that are...

Growing early ( as in Iron Age/ Saxon ) food plants?

But Red, doesn't that line of argument apply to all of the old time crops? None of them grew very well in their natural state which is why they were selectively bred to acclimatise them to the surrounding habitat if they were not native and also to increase their yields so they became worth...

Growing early ( as in Iron Age/ Saxon ) food plants?

If you write or phone to Barony Mills, Birsay, Orkney and ask nicely (send some postage, perhaps) they will send you a couple of handfuls of Bere seeds, very useful stuff with a long, long history. http://www.birsay.org.uk/baronymill.htm http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bere

    Knife lore

Another piece of lore: Never touch a flame or hot coal with a point or edge. Makes sense as it would affect the hardness but in my circles it is also taken as bad luck.

    Knife lore

In our family you never give any pointed article, needle, knife, scissors, etc. You buy it with a silver coin.

    Shoe laces upgrade

I suspect you will find that the shoes keep coming untied. Shoelaces need a little stretch to keep the standard knot locked without any direct tension on the knot and that is one thing that Dyneema doesn't have. Double tying (overhand the loops) will help a little.

Axe head (Bahco) - able to be fixed?

Ah, a left handed axe. Seriously before ditching it try using it (after a sharpen) lefthanded. or better, let someone naturally lefthanded use it and see how it goes. You may be surprised.

    The perfect mulled wine..........

I am not sure how I missed this all these years. I make up a spiced wine in the winter and this is worth copying, as a variation if nothing else. I was told half a century ago that mulling a drink, wine, beer whatever, involved quenching a clean hot poker in the warmed drink directly, the...
