I use LinkedIn. Here's my advice....

Look at profiles that work in the same field that you want to work in. Read their bio and pick out the stuff that catches your eye. Add it to your profile if it fits you as well.

Don't have a bio that reads like War and Peace.

If you're looking for work, don't write stuff like 'looking for in X sector', write something that's exciting. When I was looking for work I put 'Moving towards a brighter horizon'. I got quite a few hits from people asking where I saw myself going.....

Open your profile so recruiters can search for you.

Add people who work in your field even if you don't know them. It could lead to something.

Comment on posts that are relevant to you. Its gets your profile out there and people see you. A good friend of mine got his job simply because he was giving insightful, educated comments and someone saw it, messaged him and 2 months later he now has a 40k salary.

Set up a separate email address just for work. Use this for LinkedIn. Make sure your email address is sensible and business-like, not something like 'bigballsbrian@yahoo.com'

Don't bother with paying for the pro version. You only get more emails and not any other benefits really.

Good luck!

Good advice from Van-Wild.

A colleague of my wife's had her account hacked and I received and email purportedly from her which was full of grammatical errors. Since she has written books on correct grammar for university undergraduates, she was mortified. It has been very tempting to tease her about it. I also discovered that a friend who is a renowned expert in History of Art shares a name with an American pornographer.

My wife closed her account as it had more problems than advantages.

I use it. The only advice in addition to Van-Wild is don't lie/embellish the truth. Your profile can be seen globally, and if you get an interview or whatever because of it, you are likely to be asked questions about what you have written. Think of it as an elaborate CV, and you won't go far wrong.

I just copy / paste my regular CV into it. The beauty of linked in is that recruiters find you as opposed to the normal method of you applying individual jobs. Set your status as Actively looking and you should get several recruiters contacting you per week assuming your skill set is desirable.

My opinion based on personal experience is that it encourages everyone who is selling a service of some sort to want to link up to promote their service, product or self in some way. I get far too many emails already without attracting any more. I closed my account after a few months. This is just my personal view and others may have benefited from it, but it is not for me.

Most of my mates in the private sector have them. They may not have got a job through them but their pages were definitely checked out by their future employers.

a bit like a teenager not having Instagram, if an potential employer asks it’s nice to have one.
