I find the subject somewhat fascinating, our ability to inflict brutal torture is one of humanities defining characteristics, there was a study done a while ago and I've forgotten the name of it but basically it was to see if "normal "people would torture folks when told to by an authority figure and well basically they did.

A lot of medievel torture devices were never actually used or even invented till later on like iron maidens etc

The reasons why torture is employed generally give an idea of how horrific it will be, methods such as scaphism are particularly cruel, those types of methods are used for inflicting torturous deaths, torture for extracting information are pretty useless( folk will tell you anything if you start waterboarding them so are pretty useless far simpler to threaten there family with torture etc, then there are those who have no purpose other than there own enjoyment who tend to employ methods that most would never be able to comprehend.

Rudyard Kipling a wee poem that goes somewhat like

"When your wounded and left on afghanistans plains and the women come out to cut up what remains, just roll to your rifle and blow out your brains and go to your god like a soldier"

If you read about the favoured torture method used in Afghanistan your faith in humanity will dwindle to nil

Thenihilist, it's not your faith in humanity that should dwindle, it should be your faith in (and blind loyalty to) the empire that dissipates with every sick new revelation.
Normal people do good and bad every day. These men who run the game do and command evil every day in order to stay at the top forever. Manipulation through the media, scapegoats to take blame for things the higher ups have done, bullying contries with threats of apocalyptic war when you don't get your way... telling the people of the UK that 10 years, 400+ British lives and £20 billion have been spent in Afghanistan to "Improve the lives of the local people.." ... : | you must be mad if you buy that. Maybe vast amounts of gold, lithium, assorted other minerals and control of the world's heroin (the Chinese do love to chase that dragon eh?) might add up to being worth more than the 10 years, 400+ British lives and £20 billion... you decide!
