    Brass Lantern

I believe it is a 320. The only thing that has me wondering - no paint on this lamp and except on the cap over the chimney. And no sign of paint being removed. Lantern looks like it was used once. No scratches, etc. I have no photos and no camera wth me except the one on this phone which i...

    How to smoke fish?

Set up fire. Let go to coals. Build tripod. Butterfly fish. Attach to uprights. Add green alder or maple to fire-you may even want to soak it in water first. Wrap tripod in canvas tarp. Be sure your tripod is well out beyond the edge of the firepit. Watch closely.

    Wild Things

Had two bucks jump in front of the car on the way to work tonight. Happens every autumn when they go in rut. A cross fox "raced me for a ways. They run in front of the car until you get too close - then zip off to the shoulder and out of the way. It is something to see a cross fox. They are not...

To Kill or not to Kill

Growing up on the farm, we shot lots of things we didn't eat. This was no hobby farm, it wqs our livelyhood. Fox, hawks, bears, wolves, owls, gophers, badgers, mink, skunks, weasels. If you only had fox get after your chickens once - you didn't have many fox around. Shot a lot of dogs too...

    Coffee

Camp coffee. Nothing like it. I usually make a quart and a half kettle full at a time. I put in 3/8 cup of grounds and boil it, or put 3/8 cup in a paper filter, tied with string (prepared before hand. If it is cooked over an open fire - you can't make bad coffee.

    Signal crayfish...again!

After reading all these posts I'd have to say the whole thing sounds nonsensical. You have a species that is damaging native species. Presumably the gov't wants to get rid of that species, but they make the taking of said species so tough anyone in their right mind would have a hard time...

    pheasent shooting

We don't have many pheasent this far north. I grew up hunting grouse in the woods, where you have to be a quick snap shooter to get one. I've found when hunting pheasent, I raise my gun, take the safety off, put the safety back on, and take it off again, and that's about the right time to...

    Signal crayfish...again!

Don't know anything about the UK laws. I also don't know if your crayfish are the same as ours. Here, we just lift up rocks and grab the crayfish (you have to be quick and remember they swim backwards). Yesterday my nephews went out and got between 100 and 150 in a couple hours. Tasted great!

Making Jerky in the oven or in a dehydrator?

I've always found smoking it over apple wood makes the best jerk.

    splitting wood

Birch always do this. Even when splitting fire wood (I would never try to do a rail out of birch) you have to hit the birch piece dead center - or it will split off to the side. Locally, rails are split from cedar, hackamatack, or ash. Pine works - but doesn't last. Oak works and lasts...
