Ignoring the humanity and stupidity I would have guessed it would have not made it through the book. If as they say it was a thick hard-backed encyclopedia.
They used a frikkin Desert Eagle?!? There are safe ways of doing a stunt like that, and then there is the dumb way, and they chose dumb. Absolutely tragic. Even two stupid parents are way better than what those kids are going to have to grow up with now.

It was a .50 calibre round fired from a Desert Eagle at a range of 1 foot. It had to go somewhere, somewhere forwards. If it hadn't exited the book, the impact of the book would probably have killed him.
heard this on the radio at work, was curious why they did not try shooting the book with no one behind it first, just to see what would happen.
I have often tried this with yellow pages/ argos catalogs when I have got a new gun just to see what it takes to stop a bullet, a good example is, the good old .22lr takes about 20mm of catalog to stop it at 30m. (it took about 8 inchs to stop a .243win at 50m)

Same reason people under the influence of certain hallucinogens don't try taking off from the ground first to actually check they can fly. The world is a better place without Desert Eagle toting idiots shooting point blank at others holding a book in front of them.
I agree with you, the world is a better place without people like this, I just wonder at the thought process of stupid people.

People make millions from youtubing, so people at there own devices to get famous for cash is a bad news. It isn't the first death brought on by the Internet fame and it will not be the last. Shame though, especially for the woman, goaded into it and now left behind with the guilt, blame and the charges.

Shouldn't that make these "nearly 30 onlookers who watched" also guilty of 2nd degree manslaughter via the joint enterprise law in as much as they witnessed it & did nothing to stop it?

Sadly true.
So very sadly I believe we're seeing the early signs of lives lived in two worlds. Namely one that enables you and I to be so critical as given of so-called 'real world' experience compared to that born of social media where reality is the next on-line responce at any cost rather than a certain caution provided by common sense and the searing pain of basic physics.

It is bizarre to hear the 'news' outlets comment on this event as if the lure of cash from YouTube is responsible for the death of a young father.
Problem is, there was no cash to be had. Because of the nature of the video, even if it had worked out as the chap planned, it would have been demonetised within a matter of hours from upload. Recent changes in YouTube rules in light of the Pewdiepie controversy would have limited any money to be made, if any money was to be made at all.
If blame is going to be assigned it is wholely on the deceased. He convinced his pregnant girlfriend that he had fired a deagle at a book and the round hadn't gone through. Rather than asking for more details, such as distance from the book, type of book, time of day, weather conditions... a whole host of questions she could have asked, she blindly believed him. No video proof he'd fired at any book, and perhaps a good question from her might have been 'Why are we not using the same book?'
Unfortunately it doesn't qualify for a Darwin Award. The deceased had a 3 year old child and another on the way. His stupidity, combined with that of the mother for believing him blindly, has already been passed on. Given how their father died at the hands of their mother though, maybe they won't be following on the tradition of stupidity.
Personally I feel sorry for the two children. There isn't a chance the mother, who is on a 2nd degree manslaughter charge, is going to be able to keep her children given the nature of the event. So these two kids have effectively lost both parents... even having stupid parents is marginally better than no parents at all.
As for the witnesses, at least 30 people with severely underdeveloped prefrontal cortexes are still on the prowl. Not one of them stopped what they were witnessing, they just stood there and watched as a pregnant girl shot her boyfriend in the chest through a book. 32 people without an ounce of common sense and a 3 year old child who is likely permanently traumatised.
