Just watched episode nine with SWMBO and it was refreshing to hear her ranting at the TV, partly my fault.. I joked about Lucas releasing an album. Mitch tapping out was however a real shock, all she could say was "Oh god that poor boy, his mother's going to kill him when he gets home" . Personally I'm worried about Alan, he's trying to hide it but has clearly dropped a lot of body mass and made references to digestive issues. It could be that he's overdone it on the seaweed and suffering bouts of diarrhoea as a result.

Thought the exact same thing about Alan... he's so confidently eaten everything and anything, but he's visibly lost weight and he constantly looks wired.

If the pair that are left stay out there much longer our discussion may well turn to 'would you permanently damage your body for half a million dollars?'... the more tired they get, the less energy they have, the more likely for serious mistakes... this last time it was eating seaweed with fungus on it, but one slip with that kukri...

One of the things that puzzles me about these guys is that they don't trap with snares/deadfall/cage type traps for small game and ground birds. The Young Sam saw a squirrel/marmot type thing when out with his bow (so wanted him to nail the shot), but all traps are water based. Am I missing something? Cougars/bears being attracted?

Just a thought, I think the final 4 did extremely well and have massive cahoonas. Was a bit shocked when Mitch (canoe guy) tapped out

Thoroughly enjoyed that show. Kudos to the guys for trying it.
The eventual winner is a pretty awesome fellow. Not just in a survival sense, but overall a genuinely decent human being.

I take my hat off to him..

What a guy!

Genuinely great ending to the series... do kind of feel sorry for the runner up, but he'd have had to stay out there forever from what the winner was saying when it came to his rescue/collection.

Great show, Alan was dug in deep, in all ways, I was concerned about his weight loss as well, the mental side, well, I think he was slightly erm, warped, when he went in :D Kudos to young Sam, all round though, and I know it's easy sat from an armchair, I think the hunter / fisher side could have been better from his side ?

To be honest, all the guys that made it past the first few days did really well. The last four standing should be incredibly proud of what they achieved (although I hope they all get a little therapy to help them get over their ordeal :) )
Look forward to the second series!!!

Well done Alan. I had a bit of dust in my eye when his wife turned up.

I was a bit disappointed when Lucas tapped out as I was looking forward to see how he got on in his yurt.

Away ya big girls bottom. I never got dust in my eye until he got home to see his kids.... :)

Have to say, there must have been something in the air because I got a bit of muck in my eyes when the medic turned up and said they had something to tell him. There must have been a gust of wind or something because by the time he was sat with the envelope I had more muck in my eyes that coincided with what he said he'd spend the money on.

Bit weird when he got home... if that were my kids, they'd have been bouncing off the walls. Longest I've been away was 10 days for work and when I got home they nearly knocked me off my feet!

He's a lucky man to have found what he has from the experience and being who he is, he will no doubt enjoy seeing others enjoy what he has well and truly earned.

I've been avoiding this thread as i didn't want to spoil it but I'm all up to date and just saw the final episode (although i think there might be a homecoming episode for the rest)

Alan was awesome but i think the last few contestants will need a bit of therapy after all is done.

One thing i want to know is how were the battery drops and footage collection done? no way did they have 2 months of battery power in those boxes.

i like to imagine it was hunger games style parachute drops.

Turns out they had medical checks when needed and a drop off point for camera batteries.

Throughout the series I've been on the borderline about the interaction thing and whether or not certain elements have been faked for the telly, but frankly the last two episodes have totally redeemed the series... especially seeing the transformation of Alan in this last episode. He's lost so much weight... and some of the unseen footage that was shown in this last episode shows what a mental struggle it has been for him... and no doubt them all.

Admire the lot of them for putting themselves up for it and having a lash... at the very least we've seen what it takes mentally to remain out there with the remaining 4. Not totally surprised by the winner, but I was surprised at the mental breakdown of both Lucas and Mitch... both of them let it get in their heads and that was it... game over.

Been wondering... who's up for approaching a production company over here? Do a UK version

Hell no, they would send us Brits somewhere truly diabolical where our experience counts for nought like the Australian outback.

I was thinking of one set inside the UK... probably Scotland, but because there is zero chance of a dangerous animal eating your face off in the middle of the night, maybe reduce the gear to 5 items.

5 items in a remote location, majority would say they could easily last... but as we've seen with the Alone series... its the mental thing that gets you in the end. Some guys lasted a day or two, some over 30 days, but the mental thing is the challenge if you have a reasonable amount of knowledge of how to live off the land.

A good ending indeed. And the outcome was well deserved. I could have happily seen it go the other way but I'm glad it turned out the way it did.

Seemed like a nice genuine chap. I could quite happily sit and have a beer with both of them. :p No spoilers from this corner.

I applied for season two - but I suspect an asthmatic ant would have more chance at getting on the show than me. Ho hum.

A UK version would be interesting, but where would you do it? It would have to be the highlands of Scotland surely?

No. Exactly the same list of kit elective options. Only way to balance effectiveness.
Can't compare one series with another without that.
UK coastal setting = have a slash at it!

The British Columbia coastline is completely unforgiving for those who won't/don't/can't blend in.
Two centuries ago or more, there were hundreds of thousands of native there who did everything from
the aquaculture of mussels and oysters to building 60ft, ocean going,
western red cedar boats for raiding and trading as far south as Oregon.

Our ancestors gave them all the gift of smallpox.

I just started watching, though I've only seen the first two episodes. It's got my mind buzzing about how to get enough calories every day! I found this fantastic blog on wild food in the pacific northwest and there are a lot of extremely detailed posts about potential resources! I read through and thought giant horsetail and sea peas are two that might be in the biome and worth a bit of foraging. I'm still unsure if the region's pines are worth it to harvest the pine nuts - though pine nuts are so full of fats, it might be worth it no matter how fiddly! There are also some posts on various corms, though I'm not sure if they're available west island, or up that far north. The south is a lot drier and sunnier.
