Dundee University researchers have found evidence that fungi can "lock" depleted uranium into a mineral form.  This would make it more difficult for the heavy metal - used in armour-piercing shells - to find its way into plants, animals or the water supply.

The ruling - based on a technicality - may also safeguard the Yorkshire Dales, Exmoor, the Quantock Hills and many other places in Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

The fungus T. reesei rose to dubious fame during World War II when military leaders discovered it was responsible for rapid deterioration of clothing and tents in the South Pacific.
